[26-28.10] Open Cultural Data Hackathon

The next Swiss Open Cultural Data Hackathon will take place on 26-28 October 2018 at the Swiss National Museum. We will use the upcoming hackathon as an occasion to again intensify our outreach activities among museums and will adjust our hackathon concept by specifically encouraging the pursuit of hackathon projects that focus on engaging an audience. Further information will follow later in the year.

If you would like to join the organizing team, provide datasets to be used during the event, or support the event with a financial contribution, get in touch – and if you would like to support the cause of OpenGLAM in Switzerland in general, please consider joining our Friends of OpenGLAM network!

A look back at my projects from the last couple hackathons:

:world_map: definitely something that could be further built upon, e.g. using member institutions data

:robot: fun with recurrent neural networks would be a more apt title

:point_up_2: based on an open dataset that I helped to publish

bump. Had a good chat with a co-organizer yesterday & really looking forward to this!

Latest news via Beat Estermann:

The 4th Swiss Open Cultural Data Hackathon will take place on October 26-28 at the Swiss National Museum in Zurich. This year’s event is supported by the ETH Library, Wikimedia CH, the Zentralbibliothek Zürich, infoclio, the Swiss Social Archives, Bern Universities of Applied Sciences, and docuteam. For the first time, our event is hosted by a museum. We seize this occasion to encourage more museums to participate as data providers. Please get in touch with us if you would like to make new data available.

GLAMhack Awards

We are proud to announce that this year’s hackathon will be supplemented by a competition, the very first Swiss GLAMhack Awards. We see the awards mainly as an instrument to provide feedback to the teams and to make the event more attractive to a larger audience. Of course, we intend to preserve the collaborative spirit within the community.

The registration for our hackathon is open. Register here (deadline: 30 September 2018).

Participation in the hackathon is free, and as in the previous years, we have reserved a limited number of beds at the local Youth Hostel for you. Note however that we are running on a very tight budget this year. Thus, if your participation is related to your job and your institution/company has an employee training budget, we would appreciate a contribution to the financial expenses of the event in form of a voluntary participation fee (850 CHF). Consider also supporting us by joining the Friends of OpenGLAM Network!

#GLAMhack @ Grafik ZRH – call for helpers

We have been offered the possibility to present some projects of the hackathon at grafik ZRH – the Festival for Design and Technology in Zürich, running in parallel to our event on October 26-28. Want to help put the results of your hard work at hackathons in the public eye? Help us present the first four years of #GLAMhack in Switzerland, spread the fame and build bridges, at the grafik ZRH. If you are interested in participating in this project, please contact @oleg by August 31!

Celebrating Wikidata’s 6th birthday

On 29 October 2018, Wikidata will turn 6. If you are planning to run a hackathon project dedicated to Wikidata’s 6th birthday, please let us know in advance, and we will make you some extra space at the public project presentation session. If you get in touch early enough, the Wikidata team at Wikimedia Germany will be happy to provide us with information material and give-aways!

Registration deadline extended to October 15, because we want YOU to join the hackathon! So what are you wwwaiting for?
